Design Concept
The architects Donaldson & Warn, commissioned a glass screen for the upper level of Christchurch Grammar School Principle’s Residence to reduce sunlight and also add privacy. The four glass panels are the result of hand cutting stencils on one side of the glass and the ‘positive’ shape is removed and placed slightly off register on the reverse side of the glass. Both sides are sandblasted. Infrequent blue vinyl shapes are featured across the screen and become part of the shifting shadow patterns on the interior walls at certain times of the day.
The large sandblasted patterned glass screens play a dual aesthetic and functional role. They act as a privacy screen and a UV filter, but simultaneously project a continuously changing reflective pattern onto the interior space. The patternation is punctuated by intermittent, transparent blue circular sections that are also part of the interior reflections. The screens are intended as ephemeral pieces that change according to seasonal and daily weather conditions.
